In product development projects, having reliable dimensional information in the shortest possible time with a color map can make all the difference. At Tecniman Metrología, we recently carried out the 3D scanning of three references of plastic injection-molded parts for the automotive sector, generating a color map which allowed the client to validate their prototypes before an important meeting with a Tier 1 manufacturer.

A tight deadline for prototype validation

The client urgently needed dimensional measurements of several plastic injection-molded parts to present validation reports during a prototype review.

After receiving the parts in our Metrology Laboratory, we reorganized the department's planning to respond within the required timeframe.

For this work we use:

This combination allowed us to obtain an accurate digitization of the parts and perform a complete comparison with the CAD model.

What is a color map?

He color map It is a graphical representation that shows the deviations between the actual geometry of a part and its CAD model.

Using a color scale, it is possible to immediately identify areas where there is an excess or lack of material, facilitating the interpretation of the results without needing to analyze only measurement tables.

This visualization streamlines both dimensional validation and communication between the quality, engineering, and manufacturing departments.

Advantages of color mapping in plastic injection molded parts

In components manufactured by plastic injection, the color map provides very valuable information about the behavior of the mold during the manufacturing process.

Among its main advantages are:

  • Rapid identification of dimensional deviations.
  • Detection of areas with excess or lack of material.
  • Full comparison with the CAD model.
  • Support in the optimization and adjustment of the mold.
  • Agility in decision-making during product development.

Thanks to this information, manufacturers can reduce validation times and minimize iterations before launching into production.

The result

The client received all the necessary documentation prior to their Tier 1 customer's visit, including dimensional reports and color maps, which allowed them to validate their prototypes with accurate, visual, and easily interpretable information.

At Tecniman Metrology we help our clients obtain reliable results within tight deadlines, combining 3D scanning technology, advanced inspection software and a team specializing in dimensional metrology.
